That’s what i mean all are the same thing in different forms and one can be derived from the other. And i have no idea who Jamey Aebersold is….

Man…i don’t know your theory background but triads, intervals and chord tones are all degrees of the scale. You may think of it how you like but doesn’t change the fact that all comes from the scale.

  • AtanasovPetar 10 years ago

Calling it by it’s name “scales” or not calling it doesn’t really change the way you play. It’s just a mind set.I believe you can be expressive even if you think of “scales”.John Scofield is the perfect example. When i think of scales doesn’t mean on every chord you have to play all the 8 notes in that mode. You can still play a melody and be expressive.

The only problem with this John is that whether you want to think of it as scales or not it’s still scales.Chords are made from intervals and intervals are just degrees of the scale.So…….

I am shred type of listener. Love the Satriani, Zappa, Vai, Petrucci and Van Halen styles of playing. But I just borrowed ” Animato ” and it shook me up. What a musician. LOVE this man.

You must be an attention seeking low achiever masquerading as an intellectual jazzer. On your profile there’s just ONE lonely video and no friends at all (so sad).

  • taildragger53 10 years ago

Err…..Bill Evans, Wes, Parker..what nationality were they? Go check it out.
I live in Canada also and class you as a freakin’ embarrassment to your nation.

  • taildragger53 10 years ago

What’s it like to be fucking perfect?? Pray enlighten us…you egocentric prick!

  • taildragger53 10 years ago

I think JA22guitar has forgotten that Parker, Wes etc were also American.
He’s probably another 12 yr old Justin Beiber fan trying to create a stir on here.
He sure has the inflated ego of an adolescent!

There’s place for every form of jazz guitar. I love Wes, he’s my fave but i couldn’t listen to Wes all day long without reaching for some Ralph Towner or John Abercrombie. Their creative energy is different and i respect that.
There are many forms of jazz and there is NO place for narrowmindedness. If there were we’d still be in the big band era and Bird would never’ve been accepted.
How comes JA22guitar isn’t famous, with all his great knowledge?

this man is a monster of thoughtful and progressive jazz guitar.one of the best around….period. …have a nice day.

    @JA22guitar
Wow. I’ll leave your playing alone. Let’s just say you’re a (barely) intermediate player and leave it at that. More importantly:

    1) You’re dissing a jazz legend, on the internet, which means it will last *forever*.
    2) Maybe you’re missing something that DeJohnette and Erskine hear in this guy.
    3) Your attitude flies right in the face of what Abercrombie – and ever other serious master – cultivates, namely, transcending ego in one’s playing.

    - Mark, man – you are a good player – I just hope you realize it reflects poorly on yourself when you are so dissmissive of others in this art form……It may benefit you to start thinking about how “you don’t care for this player” as opposed to the whole “if I don’t like it, it is not jazz.” grow up.

C’mon now,did you really need to slam ALL Americans?

  • horaciobozia 10 years ago

the idea of “proper groove” or “correct bop/jazz rhythmic phrasing” in a style which is highly improvisational seems a bit ridiculous.

  • horaciobozia 10 years ago

having a great ear is probably your most valuable tool as an improviser or a solo performer but in my opinion a well rounded musician is someone who can effectively communicate what they themselves are doing or what anyone else is doing using a language that most other musicians understand (in modern jazz that language is theoretical). learning 300 tunes by ear is impressive but who cares if you don’t actually contribute anything to the style outside of blowing over standards?

  • JA22guitar 10 years ago

by the way I know well over 300 standards by ear and don’t need a book. I mean when you lift Bill Evans and learn the tunes directly from the composers versions, you really don’t have to worry. You see that is why I am able to make the correct observations that I do. Please let me know if you need any help in learning jazz music I would be happy to help. Let me guess you are American right?
